EVENT RECAP: COACHELLA 2012 LIVES UP TO THE HYPE & MORE
It’s all over and what we experienced what was an amazing weekend filled with new friends, amazing performances and memorable moments. Coachella essentially cloned itself this year– two weekends, identical lineups– and still sold out in about an hour. Maybe it’s that projection of audacity that made a lot of the Thursday talk before weekend one center around divine intervention. The weather called for rain on Friday and, failing that, lows in the 50s– positively arctic conditions in a California desert populated by tank tops and cut-offs. And then there were rumors of holographic projections allowing Nate Dogg and 2Pac to perform from beyond the grave during Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s closing set on Sunday. (Pac “showed”; Nate did not.)With those things in mind, it would be easy to consider Coachella yet another too-big-to-fail institution that needed some kind of supernatural chin check. But, for a festival that can appear to be focused solely on making money (because it’s incredibly good at it), Coachella is way more progressive than it needs to be. It’s basically in a transition period that appears to be endless: As the event consistently expands, it has to play more loosely with its definition of how popularity can truly be measured. So the lineup can’t help but seem misleadingly underwhelming on first glance. Whether we’re talking Pulp, Jeff Mangum, or Mazzy Star, the reaction to many of the reunion acts was, “I don’t remember them being that popular.” Likewise, for a lot of the new acts who had something at stake this weekend, the sentiment may have been, “I had no idea they were that popular”– a bottle of water costs $2, which is $2 more than the amount of legal tender exchanged for the albums of sub-headliners Frank Ocean, the Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, and Azealia Banks combined.
Ocean, Banks, and the Weeknd’s presence felt particularly important because they come from a pop/R&B strain that Coachella had largely ignored previously. Ocean and the Weeknd offered an interesting heaven-or-hell dynamic based on how they deal with the effects of drugs and sex. For Ocean, they’re means of expressing a hippie, utopian ideal of the world; for the Weeknd’s often mean-spirited music, though, their ease of acquisition reveals a complete emotional detachment.
Ocean’s performance drew a crowd almost as large as that of the concurrently playing Pulp, but his relative inexperience as a live performer was soon evident. For whatever reason, the Gobi Tent is perennially the one where performers point to the soundman and make the “turn it up” motion every five seconds (it’s the stage Ariel Pink walked off last year), and Ocean was beset by sound issues, which he gamely fought throughout. It appeared that he was winning: The crowd absolutely lost their shit when Tyler, the Creator made a brief cameo to perform “Analog 2″ and the meta effect of performing the Coachella-repping “Novacane” at Coachella was one of the clear breakthrough moments of the weekend. Ocean has the charm to woo a crowd with a completely a cappella performance if necessary, but unfortunately, he came close to having to do just that… [Read More...] [View Photos]

EUROPE’S “SENSATION” TO HIT THE US FOR THE 1ST TIME IN OCTOBER 2012!
JUST IN! Famously known for their “Best Visual Event”, Europe’s Sensation is coming to the US with dates to be announced in March. Events produced by Europe’s mega events company ID&T announced their intention to hit the US market. Such an announcement has shaken up the EDM world as where to the event could be hosted. The large magical displays with self created water and light technology would need a large, open location for what the US hasn’t seen before. Does this mean Miami? Vegas? LA? The show originated in the Netherlands has grown to shows all over Europe from London to Amsterdam. The event is famed from their large spectacle shows where for example, custom images are created with falling water from arrows to heart shapes! That’s right? We’re not talking about images produced with lights on water, we’re talking about actual images formed while the water is falling. It was only a matter of time for such large European companies to invade the US where EDM has become more and more mainstream where their nationally prized artist are now equally demanded in the US.
